Pink Leather Jackets -PROMO SHOT

\ ETOBICOKE \

The Groovestone band turned out to be more stone than groove in their Tuesdays stint at Southside Johnny’s in Etobicoke and now the band, having previously also burned out Timothy’s Pub in Etobicoke, has scampered back to Port Credit to play weekly at Roc’n Doc’s, where they should be right back at home. The club, like the band, takes a somewhat lackadaisical approach to promoting shows, so this is a good fit for both parties there.

Meanwhile Southside owner John Theodore, having had a taste of the potential for Tuesday live music on the few evenings that the Groovestoners brought out a decent crowd, is turning that night over to a band that made its debut in the room just last year but has attracted some good response from the Rock oriented crowd in the room at 3653 Lake Shore Blvd. a bit east of Brown’s Line.

Pink Leather Jackets is a high-energy young four-piece that plays a diverse mix of classic Rock oldies and, most importantly, also incorporates a lot of more modern material into their sets.  They have a sound that’s been described as sounding “like rock’n’roll infused with a bit of soul and punk” and also have several originals “with catchy choruses and heavy tones.”

The group prides itself on getting people to put down their phones and start dancing, which to my mind is a much healthier alternative. Just as pertinent, they love to play, so won’t be shutting down at midnight like their aging predecessors on the gig were wont to do.

The show now starts at a time more in keeping with the other nights of the week here, at 9:30, and will run til 1 —or maybe later if the crowd wants encores, as John tells me this band has no problem playing as long as listeners are into it.There’s no cover for any shows at Southside, ever, and the room offers some great Tuesday specials during the show, including $5 shots of Jack Daniels and Tequila, as well as the “Burger ‘n’ Bud” pint all-day Tuesday special that’s recently been reduced in price to just $10.99.  And, the club now also has tall boys of Miller Lite for just $5 every day!

A livelier, more amenable band, better prices for food and drinks and the new comfy furniture and relaxed but safe and fun vibe of the room add up to make Tuesdays here a pretty good candidate to become an honourary weekend night!
