More styled than wild, Dr. B’s ladies in spotlight tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 160512Th | Shows for Thursday, May 12, 2022

Marci Jameson at brother Brian Gladstone’s birthday show in 2014 -Gary 17

\ TO DOWNTOWN \

Although he’s calling it “Ladies Gone Wild,” tonight’s edition of Brian Gladstone’s “Best of Dr. B’s” installment at Free Times Café features five femmes who are more like to be showing class than … you know.

There are several female songwriters and singers who take part in Gladstone’s weekly open stage at the club so choosing only five can’t have been easy, but the selection comprises an interesting mix of talents, all of them women of mature age.

He didn’t have to look far to find two of them: both Bonnie Gladstone and Marci Jameson are sisters who are part of his very talented family that also includes acclaimed songwriter Howard Gladstone among others. Although I’ve known the two sisters for many years, I’ve never been aware of them as songwriters; but whether or not they do have originals, I do know they both have superb vocal abilities.

I’ve written previously about songwriter Linda Saslove, who happily seems to be getting back in the swing of things after a bit of a rough winter battling a bug. Hopefully tonight is another step along the way of getting some wider recognition than the cult following she already enjoys.

In addition to those three, highly regarded Folk songwriter Joanne Crabtree will also be on the bill, along with Shirley Bell, with whom I’m not familiar.

Gladstone will also do a few of his own eclectic Roots-based tunes, which are substantial lyrically and musically, probably accompanied by his sisters.  Things get underway in the back room of the club at 320 College St. at 8, with doors at 7:30 and a $15 (or pwyc) cover, all of which is split between the guests.
