Closing of the Gate ends 13-year Saturday tradition today | TorontoMoon.ca 180414Sa | Shows for Saturday, April 14, 2022

Bill Heffernan -Malu Baumgarten

\ TO WEST \

It’s the end of an era for Roots-Rock fans who’ve been gathering Saturday afternoons for the past 13 years at Gate 403 on the Roncesvalles strip of west TO for the weekly 5-8 show hosed by affable songwriter Bill Heffernan.

The club has been sold and closes after tomorrow’s finale performance, with which Bill and several of the members of his Homeland Security Band will also be involved.

Today his troupe, calling itself The Remnants for the occasion (since some members are out of town so the group that assembles will be “the Remnants” of who’s available, he says) along with a raft of special guests will gather for one more show in the venue at 403 Roncesvalles Ave.

Some of those who’ll be on hand include Shelley Coopersmith, Gord Goodwin, Olesh Maksymiw, Howard Willett, Michael O’Grady, Mr. Rick and Michelle Rumball.  But I’d expect a lot more of the plethora of featured talents who’ve appeared at these soirees over the years will pop in to do cameos.

Fortunately, Bill tells us, he expects to continue the series, after a suitable period of mourning over the balance of the Spring and through the Summer (when the series has always taken an hiatus anyways) so while the Gate may be closing, the horse will still be in the barn, albeit a different one elsewhere.
