Barnes teaming up with the other Woldemichael at Hirut tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 180426Th | Shows for Thursday, April 26, 2022

Barnes & Woldemichael Quartet at Hirut -Facebook

\ TO EAST \

For some time now Jazz drummer and composer Daniel Barnes and various combos he anchors has showcased on the last Thursday each month on the well appointed low-rise stage in the acoustically superior room at Hirut Café Ethiopian restaurant and music bistro in East York.

Hirut co-owner Tibebe Woldemichael, who also does sound duty and helps his wife with kitchen and serving duties most nights when there’s live music, is musically savvy himself (not to mention a gifted multi-instrumentalist) and a big fan of Barnes, who has made the cozy his musical home.

Barnes’s default group for the 8-11 monthly shows with a pwyc cover is his Low Stress Trio, though often he ends up bringing in more players than that name would suggest.

Tonight he appears as part of a stellar four-piece teamed up with another Woldemichael, saxophonist Girma Woldemichael, as the Barnes & Woldemichael Quartet that also features keyboardist Jeremy Ledbetter and bassist Tyler Emond.

Ethiopian-born Girma Woldemichael is a feature attraction in his own right and he has also appeared at Hirut many times over the past several years teamed up with a variety of artists doing a blend of Ethiopian and North American Jazz, including with Barnes in this unique four-piece arrangement.

Together with versatile Barnes, once again the pair tonight will deliver a Worldbeat blend of Ethio-Jazz classics and also “new original World music” compositions in what the call their “international Jazz sound” that is distinctively charming and captivating.
