Five celebration-fundraiser shows express more love than a Valentine | 160221Su | Shows for Sun., Feb. 21, 2016

Please Note: Since this story was published I’ve been informed that the show in Lindsay described within has been postponed due to heating issues at the theatre where it was to be held.

Last Sunday was Valentines Day but a number of shows happening tonight seem to be demonstrating that the Sunday love is living on in spades.

As we detail in a separate story, the no-cover Sunday open stage jam at Relish tapas eatery and music emporium at 2152 Danforth Ave. in east TO celebrates six years tonight.

Meanwhile another weekly Sunday event, the 10-2 classic/alt-Blues/Rock showcase by Chris Caddell with his Horshack band at Orbit Room at 580 College St. downtown, has been going for five years as of this evening. And in addition to celebrating that with various special guests, the group, which has declared the 10 p.m. show a suit-enthusiast-friendly event and promised to dress up, will be using the occasion to raise funds for respected bass player Steve Pelletier, who’s in a cast and out of work since suffering a recent arm injury. Your $10 cover and any donations go to help him out tonight.

But six years and five years is nothing compared to the anniversary being celebrated at another party-cum-fundraiser tonight as Tranzac Club at 292 Brunswick Ave. in the Annex area celebrates 50 years with its annual fundraising “Winter Feast” that also includes musical performances by esteemed talents like Nancy White, The Band Moms, Raconteurs, Michael Herring Quartet, Kristine Schmitt and The NAGS Players. It’s a 6 p.m. affair and costs $10 to see the show only or $20 if you also want to partake in the vegan repast replete with victual delights.

Starting even earlier in the day, at 3 p.m. up in the heart of Kawartha Lakes northerly adjacent to Durham Region, a stellar cast of performers gathers at a theatre in Lindsay to raise funds for the local Academy Of Performing Arts. A day-long event, it includes sets by Marlene Clarke; Jack de Keyzer; Howard Ross & The Full Count Blues Band; Rick Fines and Johnny Cox & The Magnetic Line . There’s actually two shows, (though the promo doesn’t clearly indicate when the first ends and second begins) and cover for the event at the Academy Theatre for Performing Arts at 2 Lindsay St. S. is $20 for either show or $30 for both.

Finally, on a somewhat less cheery but very much love-laced note, there’s a posthumous album release and life celebration for the much-cherished late Roots songwriter and “Man of A Thousand Songs” Ron Hynes (who passed away in November at 64 years of age) at Hugh’s Room (2261 Dundas St. West in TO West). The 8:30 show celebrating completion of Later That Same Life, a collection of his songs, features relatives Joel Hynes and Rebecca Hynes, Canadian icon Nancy White, Julian Taylor, Steve Briggs and many more. Cover is $32 and I’d guess getting an album is extra.

Valentine’s Day may be a memory (and really, isn’t it more about lust than love?) but true love’s ingredients —affection, commitment and nurturing— seem to be very much in the air today.
