Folkie Clela Errington is far from predictable

\ TORONTO WEST \

A Folk singer with lovely original compositions and a lively and engaging approach to covering classics of the genres, Clela Errington doesn’t need any help to stand out on a stage. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t appreciate accompanists —quite the opposite, in fact. She often appears with her daughter, Jocelyn Barth, as a vocal partner and has also teamed up with several other Roots artists such as Kirsten Jones since she started to get more active on the scene during the past year.

But while fans have come to expect a sort of laid back approach to her stage manners (to be expected with Folk music) this adventurous lady has other dimensions that she recently shared and that maybe hint at what she’s got in store for the future.

A couple of weeks ago Errington also joined the house band at the birthday bash for Dave McManus at The Cat bar in the Junction area and, after doing several tunes from her usual repertoire, parked the guitar and, backed by McManus on bass, Les Hoffman on guitar, Julian Fauth on keys, George Baumann on sax and Kenny Yoshioka on harp proceeded to animate the dance floor by singing a rousing version of B.B. King’s Blues chestnut “Every Day I’ve Got The Blues”!

Her appearance today at Gate 403 on Roncesvalles isn’t likely to be quite so dramatically out of the norm, but the 5-9 show could be a lively one in a different way, as she’ll be joined by violinist Jill Daley as a duo.  And since another catgut bower and friend of Clela’s, iconic Shelley Coopersmith, performs as part of the Chris Staig Trio that follows this show and has said she expects to arrive early to catch Errington’s last set, don’t be surprised if she gets lured onto the stage with the pair for a jig or two.
