\ TO EAST \

There are lots of benefits and fundraisers happening this time of year, including a few listed today, but some such events stand out from the crowd either due to the cause they’re supporting or the sheer talent of the lineup offered.

This afternoon’s 24th annual Riverdale Share concert, a grassroots initiative totally run by volunteers and which raises dough to buy truckloads of food for distribution to local families in crisis in the Broadview Avenue-based area of east TO, scores high on both counts.

This 3 p.m. show at Danforth Music Hall, with a ticket price of just $20 (and some tickets being offered by at least one reputable online source for less than $12 the morning of the show!) plus a non-perishable food item, is probably the best bang for your buck that you will get for a long time to come.

It offers an eclectic lineup that includes established headliner draws like Danny Marks and Tabatha Johnson, icons-in-the making like Julian Taylor and the Dala Folk duo along with veteran performers with enduring appeal like Washboard Hank, Sharon of Sharon Lois & Bram and Mike Ford & Murray Foster of Great Big Sea and Moxy Fruvous.

Plus the roster includes nearly a dozen other lesser known but highly entertaining performers of a wide variety of genres, including some local community troupes, some of whom will no doubt steal the show in the hearts of at least some attendees. [See listings below under Toronto East section for full lineup.]

Then there’s the Riverdale Share Band ensemble of seasoned pros that will be backing many of the featured guest performers —it alone is worth the price of admission and is a true collection of all-star players.  Fiddler/arranger Tom Leighton is on piano and I suspect he’s been involved from the beginning, going back to his days of regularly appearing with Mark Haines and other acts next door at Allen’s.  Guitarist/musical director Steve Briggs is also at the show’s heart, but it also includes guitar luminaries such as Wendell Ferguson, Mike Tanner (who also emcees) and Danny Greenspoon.  There’s also a trumpet, sax, trombone, three violinists including Shelley Coopersmith, a second pianist and veteran rhythm section in bassist Russ Boswell and Kevin Turcotte on the kit.

Many of the acts are staged by local community groups that teach dance, theatrical presentations and so forth, so the playbill has a truly eclectic flavour.  With a crew like this the entertainment is going to be stellar and you can bet with the vibe in the vintage venue at 147 Danforth Ave. a bit east of Broadview will be just as warmly memorable and nourishing.
