Canadian PRIDE -Gary 17

With the beginning of the PRIDE weekend falling on the same day as our national Canada Day celebration and in the light of recent events it was perhaps telling and highly appropriate that the Prime Minister chose this week, while U.S. President Obama was visiting the House of Commons, to make a strong personal declaration that the right of citizens to love whom and how they choose is part of the inclusiveness that is the hallmark of our land.

You don’t have to like the way someone else chooses to express their sexuality —any more than you have to believe in someone else’s god, admire the way they dress or wear their hair or appreciate the languages they speak at home or the foods they eat.  But you do have accept and at least tolerate it, because that is the Canadian way —it is the underpinning value upon which rests this great mosaic of co-existence that defines us and makes us the envy of much of the world.

It’s a federal holiday with a beautiful weekend ahead and even though a rain storm is forecast for the afternoon, it’s almost certain that the plethora of events celebrating Canadian-ness in all its forms that are planned to take place across the GTA will go ahead no matter what the skies have in store for us.  That’s Canadian pluck, and that too is the Canadian way.

There’s music of many kinds and fireworks and good food all over the place and today most of the events are free.  Enjoy the party, rejoice in our diversities and cherish our freedoms to be whoever we choose to be, however we choose to be it.
