Double-dating’s ok when you’re a musician

Normally one might look somewhat askance at a friend who confessed that they were “double-dating”, but when it comes to musicians, such behaviour is not only tolerable but should be encouraged.

Two very talented performers who’ll be doing just that on Saturday April 5 are power Pop Jazz singer Laura Hubert and Blues-Pop icon James Anthony.

In Laura’s case she won’t have far to travel between shows: Saturday afternoon she and her band, which always features keys maestro Peter Hill as well as reliably A-list backing players such as Jim Bish or Shawn Nykwist on sax, will do the 3:30-6:30 slot at Jazz emporium The Rex (194 Queen West near University Ave.). Then at 10 the troupe, bound to include a drummer such as Paul Brennan, will be mixing ol’ time Jazz Pop with other genres when they appear at eclectic Grossman’s (379 Spadina) 10-close. It’s always a destination gig when Laura plays at no-cover G-man, so come early if you want to get a good seat.

For Halton Region resident Anthony, the commute will be longer, as after his 2-6 weekly “Blues Sermon” session at Black Swan Pub in Burlington (a bar named Black Swan that actually has an up-to-date website —who’da ever thought!), he heads east to appear with his band starting at 9 at Blue Goose Tavern in Etobicoke. He won’t be lonely on the journey though: at both events he’ll be featuring a special guest, singer John Mays of multiple-Juno-winning Blues paragons Fathead. Between Mays’s ability to morph Blues, R&B and Soul and Anthony’s prowess at anything, both shows should be memorable. -Gary 17, www.torontomoon.ca
