/TORONTO WEST/

As I’ve written about before on several occasions, Roncesvalles Ave. on Saturday afternoons is a special place to be for live music pretty much any weekend of the year.

But today it’s extra-special as the local Business Improvement Area and community-oriented residents in the area put on the 5th annual Roncy Rocks festival of music, art and culture from 11 a.m. through till early evening.

There’s a plethora of musical talent performing free on five outdoor stages as well as art displays, an art auction and art judging event and a whole raft of things for kiddies and their parents to do together, not to mention displays from many local merchants and outdoor food offerings.

Michael O'Grady -17

All of this is in addition to the shows that regularly happen at three venues along the strip every Saturday afternoon!

The outdoor stages feature acts like Fraser Melvin Blues Band, North Of Queen, Michelle Rumball, Peter Elkas, David Celia, Fraser/Daley Duo, Erika Werry and many more, including Celtic Roots-Rock artist Michael O’Grady. [Full listings with times appear on the event’s website.]

O’Grady, who’s on the Marmaduke Stage from 2-3, p.m., happily also appears afterwards with his full band as the special guest act for the weekly Gate 403 matinee hosted by Bill Heffernan from 5-8 p.m.

Rootsy Blues songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Arthur Renwick still appears 5-8 at The Local across the street from G403, and probably there’s also a 4-7 act at Inter Steer Tavern, which I’ve written about before when the Laura Hubert Band appears there (not today, unfortunately).

The festival wraps around 8 p.m. but if you’re still hankering for more, both The Local and G403 also have evening entertainment. Or, what I would recommend, you could venture not too far away from there, over to Axis Gallery & Grill at 3048 Dundas St. West.  There you’ll find The Junction City All-Stars, with Dave McManus on bass, Kenny Yoshioka on harp and Bart der Stepanian on the kit, teamed up with melodic Pop artist Jay Pennell —and welcoming back an old friend, Les Hoffman—  to do a rollicking no-cover Blues-Rock show starting at 9:30.
