John Borra & Sam Ferrara, May 2016 -GARY 17

John Borra & Sam Ferrara, May 2016 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

With popular local venues such as Not My Dog in Parkdale and The Hideout downtown being forced to close recently or in the near future for a variety of reasons, this evening’s celebration of the enduring appeal of The Cameron House stands out even more than it would normally.

The two-room venue at 408 Queen St. West, a block west of Spadina Ave., has a panoply of its regularly featured talents on the roster to commemorate its 35th birthday starting at 9 p.m.

In addition to featuring live music in both its front saloon-style lounge and rear stage-equipped room for as long as I can remember, the rental rooms above the bar have also been a refuge for musicians in need of affordable accommodation in an area that has seen rents skyrocket over the years.

The lineup for tonight’s extravaganza includes Sam Ferrara and John Borra, a Country-Roots/Rock pair that is at the heart of the club’s much deserved rep as a nurturing environment for original music.  (While each has their own band, they team up as a duo to appear weekly on Sundays at The Communist’s Daughter and once a month on a Saturday afternoon at tiny Sauce in east TO.

Other staples of the club’s current roster such as Devin Cuddy, Freeman Dre, David Celia, Patrick Brealey, Colonel Tom (of The American Pour), Jay Swinnerton and more are also to be featured and I’d expect Grier Coppins of Taxi Chain, who does a 6 p.m. show in the front room prior to the big do, will also stick around.  No doubt there will be a ton of special and surprise guests too.

While the club’s website is pretty good at listing upcoming acts it doesn’t include much in the way of ancillary info so I can’t say whether or not there will be a cover for tonight’s show.  But even if there is, tonight’s show will be well worth the price of admission.  And if whatever they collect helps ensure another five, ten, twenty or thirty-five years of this place, then it’s an investment you should be happy to make.
