The Kings at Southside Johnny’s, November 30, 2021 -GARY 17

\ RICHMOND HILL \

Ah, the Eighties —wasn’t that a time?  I used to refer to them, starting from when the decade began, as The Weighty Eighties.  (I had a sort of slogan for every year back then, and a nickname of my own for each decade after The Roaring Twenties and Dirty Thirties.)  The Eighties: “1984”; the rise of the Global VillageTM Global corporatism; Ronald Regan, Margaret Thatcher; the Cold War fuse burning.  But in retrospect, don’t they seem pretty damn relaxed and fun compared to today?

And now they’re back —did you know that?  In addition to vinyl (which has been back so long now that it’s getting sort of, you know, old, cassette tapes are apparently making a comeback, at least according to an article Wednesday from the online site for Maclean’s Magazine.

So it’s fitting that tonight’s big ticket show, which is dubbed the “80s House Party” at The Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, features not one but two of my favourite bands from back in that day:  The Spoons and The Kings.

Gordon Deppe & Sandy Horne @ Spoons show, Canada Day 2015 -GARY 17

I’ve told you about my admiration for both groups on a couple of occasions: The Spoons earlier this summer prior to a Burlington show being put on by guitarist Gordon Deppe, and The Kings back in November of 2014 when they were in Oakville.  I had a chance to groove to Spoons in the summer of 2015, when they did a Canada Day show at a small park in TO, and back in November 2013 had enjoyed the full-on Kings experience up close and personal as the group performed for the 10th anniversary of Southside Johnny’s in Etobicoke.

Both of these iconic Can-Rock bands are stellar examples of songwriting and recording of the sort there’s not enough of today: hook-laden without them being done to death; catchy lyrics with singable, earworm quality choruses that aren’t repeated ad naseum; instruments that are actually being played and vocalist who can actually sing.

Tonight’s show at the 10268 Yonge St. venue a few blocks north of Major Mackenzie Drive starts at 8 p.m. and also features the band Trixie Goes Hollywood.  Tickets range from $45 and at press time there were still some left, which you can order online.
