Dobro anniversary highlights Peterborough’s eclectic city scene | TorontoMoon.ca 171117Fr | Shows for Friday, November 17, 2021

Jerome Godboo 2016 -GARY 17

\ PETERBOROUGH \

For many years Dobro Restaurant in Peterborough was an oasis of live music in the Kawartha Region and still today, despite not doing much of a job of letting people know about it (it no longer has a functioning website and its Facebook page only contains photos of past events and food promotions) the club in the heart of the cottage country city offers a regular diet of live music.

Tonight the room at 289 George St. North celebrates ten years of existence (though you wouldn’t know it from their Facebook page) and has enlisted the TO-based Godboogie original Blues-Funk band, featuring Jerome Godboo, to keep the party lively starting at 9 p.m.  The dance-inducing combo also includes Eric Schenkman and Shawn Kellerman, with Al Cross on drums and cover is just $5 to get in on the fun.

If you live in “The Electric City” (Peterborough was the first town in Canada to install electric streetlights) or feel like making the trip there to see Godboo et al, you might also look in on some other impressive acts performing there tonight.  These days Dobro is not so much as an oasis as one of a series of watering holes that offer musical nourishment along with the other attractions.

Washboard Hank in 2016 -GARY 17

One-of-a-kind Country-Roots songwriter/old-timey banjo and washboard sensation Washboard Hank is at The White House (173 Charlotte St.); lively Top 40/Rock cover outfit Pop Machine is featured at Black Horse (452 George St. N.); and there’s a raft of indie acts at both The Garnet (321 Hunter St. W.) and at a new room known as The Venue at 286 George St. North.

At another venerable venue in the city named after Peter Robinson (a Family Compact politician who encouraged immigration to the area in the early 19th century) the Red Dog Tavern at 189 Hunter St. W., the Peterborough Folk Festival presents two original acts: The Elwins and Fast Romantics.  There’s also a couple of other rooms with live music but they don’t bother to list the times of the acts (so we don’t include them in listings) and there’s even a weekly Friday night 9-12 open mic at Southside Pizzeria at 25 Lansdowne St. West!

Sadly one room that no longer offers live music is The Spill, which for nine years used to present not only bands and songwriters but also shows by artists and poets, before it closed suddenly a month ago.  There are a few other rooms that have entertainment off and on that you may discover on your own if you’re there and I encourage you to share any finds with us for future listings.

Although the sobriquet “The Electric City” may have fallen out of fashion in recent years, based on the lineup of live musical entertainment happening tonight and many other weekends, perhaps it could well rechristen itself as “The Eclectic City”!
