Lee Van Leer at SongTown compilation disc release show in 2012 -GARY 17

\ TO EAST\

It’s exactly two months shy of two years since the death of eccentric and superbly gifted multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Lee Van Leer (as C.J. Feeney was known on the local music scene) but memories of his engaging, eager persona and scintillating talent still burn bright.

It’s to pay tribute to his memory and to raise some funds for the Variety childrens’ charity that a diverse collection of talents will be assembling tonight at Eton House at 710 Danforth Ave. a block east of Pape Avenue.

Many performers who’ve been part of the Toronto music scene will have several Lee Van Leer stories to share, not all them necessarily flattering to the devil-may-care late keyboardist and unique guitar stylist, whose “all thumbs” slide guitar stylings (he used his thumb almost like a slide tube or even capo at times) also stood out from the pack.

He was a sartorial disaster, as the accompanying pic of him performing at the release show for a SongTown compilation album featuring one of his tunes demonstrates and he had no sense of false pride.  He didn’t care about his appearance because he simply lived to write and play and performed with hundreds of musicians over the years, ranging from established household names like Danny Marks to the kids down the street who just started playing last week.  He was a perpetual presence at jams across the city and also headed a number of his own groups remarkable for scintillating music, if not for longevity.

His mercurial temperament and unusual behaviours that could make him exasperating at times is now the stuff of local music community legends,  He’d often arrive at gigs dragging a cart with what seemed to be all his worldly belongings in it, including guitars that he seemed to have a fetish for defacing and deforming, but which sounded brilliant once he started playing.  His hand-made cds with rather bizarre cover art are probably now collectors items that will eventually command big prices on e-Bay and while rough hewn on the outside, like the man himself, what they contained was often close to magic.  He was famous for booking gigs at clubs for weeks away and then arriving the next day to beg an advance or some food to tide him by.  But his smile when happy, like his playing, was pure gold, like his heart. When Death Comes 1707

Tonight’s 8-12:30 affair ($10 cover or $5 for performers) was organized by veteran drummer and singer Benny “Rave” Sanders, who shared a stage with Van Leer on innumerable occasions.  Taking place on the Eton House’s excellent showcase stage (with house sound man!), you can expect this to basically be a kind of wild and wooly jam —just as Lee would have run if he were the host.

The talent will include Benny’s new ’67 Band project functioning as a house band and features several talents seldom seen on stage these days such as guitarist-singer George Pliakes, songwriter Damon Hines, singer Max Brand , Anthony Carr on sax, Gary “Mojo” Scott on harp, and many more acts, with no doubt several surprise guests.
