McNeill & Love in the groove -Gary 17

McNeill & Love in the groove -Gary 17

\ TO UPTOWN \

A perfect fit on a Sundays roster aimed squarely at the Boomers crowd who remember the glory days of Rock. Pop, R&B & Motown/Soul, the David Love Band will no doubt create a delightfully nostalgic musical aroma at Mount Pleasant Rose from 5-8 today.

The room is the old Chick ‘n’ Deli (aka since then The People’s Chicken and then Club 747) at 747 Mount Pleasant Avenue just south of Eglinton Ave. East.  It’s always been a musical and meet-up magnet and continues the longstanding policy of live entertainment several nights a week.

As we’ve told you on numerous occasions (including last summer for a show the group did in hometown Brampton) today’s three-piece band creates a vibe more akin to what you’d expect from a five-piece or larger unit.

With double and sometimes triple harmonies and hugely versatile playing by all three members of the trio, the David Love Band is able to successfully deliver authentic versions of even some of the more complex dance-Pop hits from the 1960s.  As we told you previously, they’ve been firmly ensconced as a monthly Sunday feature at Timothy’s Pub in Etobicoke for four years now and there’s every reason to think they’ll become regulars in uptown TO as well.

Bassist/singer David Love used to be better known as a former guitarist member of The Carpet Frogs and touring/recording combos with Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman (and still presents on six string with the Classic Albums Live troupe of which he remains a member) but here he plays a variety of bass guitars to match the sound of everything from The Beatles to The Animals, The Beach Boys to Sly Stone, The Kinks to Mandala and so on.

The DLB guitarist who can match or exceed Love’s acumen on that instrument is none other than lesser known but equally gifted six-stringer Darrell McNeill, who also fronts his own Brampton-based troupe known as Fifteen Stone and like Love employs a variety of instruments to help capture the authentic sound that’s all 60s all the time.

Kevin Mulligan on the kit is of the same calibre, easily switching between domnating a track like “Wipeout” (a killer version!) to going more laid back on something by Smokey Robinson ir Sky Stone

One of the things I also really like about this group is that they don’t just get up and play, they put on a show.  David makes a point of bringing lights to clubs that don’t have them (not a problem here since the room still has the old Deli/747 stage rigging in place) and sets up their distinctive backdrop behind them to create not just a musical performance but an experience of the music that helps drive patrons to the dance floor and keeps them breathlessly anticipating what’s coming next.

There’s usually a cover charge at the MPR but often just a nominal $5 to keep out the riff raff.  There’s lots of seating here but you’ll want to get a spot close to the dance floor so get there early!
