Ozone Baby’s Phil Naro, 2019 -ME ARMSTRONG

\ TO CENTRAL \

Of all the qualities and characteristics for which the late keyboardist Hervé Basset, who passed unexpectedly in June of 2017. is remembered, his pure love of music is perhaps foremost in many minds.

A longtime supporting subscriber to TorontoMoon and booster of the local scene, whether you knew him as a fellow player, a fan or a pal, you knew he lived and breathed chords and notes and octaves and voices.  It was that passion for making music come to life that fuelled him to play Herculean sets along with duo partner Shawn Brady when they performed together (about which we wrote glowingly back in 2014.)

Hervé Basset in 2017 -GARY 17

It was Hervé’s love of music, too, that motivated him to help other players in various ways, from teaching them little tricks of the trade, encouraging them to perform their originals as well as covers during shows or bucking them up with a joke and a Jamieson when the inevitable difficulties of the business made giving up seem like an option to less battle-tested younger players.

While nothing can replace Hervé’s presence on the scene, Pop-Rock songwriter (and singer with U2 tribute band Elevation) Brady and others who benefited from Basset’s many gifts have found a way to keep the love flowing and to extend his influence beyond the mortal coil.

The Hervé Basset Foundation has already raised $5,000 to help young, emerging artists and tonight will top that up as two superb bands come together to perform in one of Basset’s favourite rooms, The Hideout, on the eve of what would have been his birthday tomorrow.

Led Zeppelin tribute Ozone Baby, fronted by veteran vocalist and songwriter Phil Naro, will do a set and another local and international icon, Tony “Wild T” Springer and his band The Spirit, will do two sets as part of the 8 p.m. till 3 a.m. show in the room at 423 College St., for which last call is extended.

There’s also an opening acoustic set by Tim Cassidy, with whom I’m not familiar, and I’m told that the club owners, who were also big fans of Herve’s, plan to open a bottle of Jamieson in honour of his birthday and to toast him at midnight with complimentary shots for the house.

Cover for all this is just $15 and the proceeds will go to help keep music playing through new young artists and to keeping Hervé’s legacy alive for years to come.
