Blues at Basso with Julian Fauth Band -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

Not everyone gets excited at the prospect of dressing up in costume and being in a room full of strangers in disguise, nor celebrating faux gore and chills.   If you’re one of those who won’t be attending one of the plethora of Hallowe’en parties happening tonight but are still looking for live entertainment, there are of course lots of other options.

One that’s laid back and offers superb Blues music is the show at the new Basso Blues Room at 320 Queen St. E. a bit west of Parliament Street.  As we’ve told you previously, the space is cozy with elegant but casual décor in the rear music lounge where Blues bands perform every Friday and Saturday in front of a fireplace that will be coming into its own right about now.

The Blues music doesn’t get much better than what’s on offer this evening either: Juno-winning songwriter and piano man extraordinaire, Julian Fauth, about whom I’ve written many, many times over the past 20-odd years, returns in trio mode for tonight’s 9-12:30 show (and again at the same tomorrow evening) along with guitarist/singer/harpist Ken Yoshioka and bass titan Dave McManus.

The grub here is excellent too, prepared by master chef Jose Corniellis, whom some readers will remember from his famed Upstairs @ Aquila restaurant that was a victual and musical hotbed in the Junction area for several years.  The wood oven that he built here with his partner Sam in the front main seating area (where speakers faithfully transmit the tunes being performed in the back room) promptly delivers reliably tasty and interesting pizzas and other pasta dishes along with various dinner and lunch staples.

There are some craft beers on tap, the service by waiters like Jessica is delightful and prices are very reasonable —and so’s the music admission cover, because despite the A-list calibre of the acts, there isn’t one!
