Mo' Kauffey in 2003 -Gary 17

Mo’ Kauffey in 2003 -Gary 17

\ KITCHENER \

He may be gone but it will be a long time before travellin’ troubadour Mo’ Kauffey is forgotten by the many fans and fellow musicians/songwriters whom he touched in a full, rich life of song.

I’ve written about Kauffey many times over the years since first meeting him back around the turn of the century after he settled in the Guelph area.  As I described him back in 2003, he was a “soulful, Rootsy guitar picker with a voice that drips authenticity and experience … one of those unique artists who can mesmerize an audience all by himself” and also an affable fellow with a wry sense of humour.

As we reported on March 14, Kauffey, born Gary Wickizer in Colorado, passed away the previous day after a battle with cancer, but had been working on a final album with several musicians from the Kitchener-Waterloo/Guelph area before he succumbed.

Several memorial shows have taken place since then and they were also used to help generate the funds to complete the disc, titled Honey Be, which is now done and being released this afternoon at iconic Kitchener venue The Boathouse in the city’s central downtown Victoria Park.

Pete Temple, Mike McDonald (yes, he of Grossman’s and McDonald-Rush renown —he and Temple had been working closely with Mo’ on producing the album) will be among a panoply of Blues/Roots performers who appear on the album taking part in today’s celebration.

There’s no cover for the 4-7 show in the beautiful room at 57 Jubille Drive but attendees are naturally being encouraged to purchase a compact disc copy of the recording for $15.
