Mary Milne for Fat Albert's feature promo 191009

Mary Milne for Fat Albert’s feature promo 191009

\ TO CENTRAL \

Not just a talented and passionate poet, Mary Milne is also a matriarchal icon to members of the TO Roots community, particularly the very gifted group of songwriters and versifiers who regularly attend the Wednesday open mics at Fat Albert’s Coffeehouse.

Mary, about whose generosity and community nurturing at Christmas-time songwriter Steve-Paul Simms wrote a charming ballad, “Mary’s Door,” was actually also one of the very first contributors to my Open Season magazine (the monthly ancestor of my weekly to-nite and this current daily TorontoMoon.ca) when it debuted back in 1992.  Her poem “Mari-froz-a,” about the surprising chilly weather that accompanied the Mariposa Folk Festival held in TO that year, appeared in Issue #04, and can also be read by register subscriber-members  on our website.

Tonight Mary is deservedly in the spotlight doing the feature at Fat Albert’s —which, at 52 years of age, bills itself as “Canada’s longest running open stage”— in the Steelworker’s Hall at 25 Cecil St., off Spadina across from Grossman’s Tavern.

Mary’s feature set takes place at 9, while sign-up to be among performers doing two-song/poem sets starts at 7 sharp.  Cover is pay-what-you-can, which helps pay for hall rental for the non-profit undertaking.
