Bernie on sound at outdoor show -COURTESY

Editor’s Note: Soundman extraordinaire Bernie Sandor, who in recent years had specialized in big band shows such as with the 10-member Steely Dan tribute Pretzel Logic appearing at Orbit Room tonight, passed away on Sunday May 26.  The following tribute was penned for TorontoMoon.ca by Pretzel Logic singer/saxist Peter Graham Mifsud.  Expect some moments of tribute to Bernie at tonight’s show in the room at 580 College St. at Clinton.

R.I.P.: Bernie Sandor will be missed and hard to replace at big band shows

A soundman is way more than that.   At various times, an ambassador; sometimes an army ranger and, at work, both an artist and a goalie.

He’s an ambassador because as the initial contact with a venue on gig night there are first impressions to make with the proprietor or manager or, God help you, the wedding planner.  He’s a ranger because, first at a gig, he’s got to figure out terrain and set things up for the band who generally come in late yet still manage to be demanding.

But for a soundman what makes it worth it is getting behind the board for the art of getting a good sound for everyone individually and blending it all together, which entails riding each guy’s different sounds because each one has a different output level, finessing that one’s volume because he gets too loud on the high notes and maybe pulling back the guitarist who gets too lost in his solos.

And why are they goalies?  Because they’re the last line of defence.  They’re the final thing that affects the sound before it gets to an audience’s ears.  Sound guys are that important to the success of the team.

Bernie Sandor went back a long time with us in the music business.  He worked the Chick N Deli when bars were the Tinder of the age.   He did sound for Nightfly at a huge event at City Hall celebrating a Leafs run in the playoffs —yes, he goes that far back— when Gilmour was the hero and Leaf fans were just starting a decades-long complaint about a missed Gretzky penalty!

More recently Bernie was somewhat of a big horn band specialist —a particularly difficult task with so many balls in the air—  as he worked with my band, Pretzel Logic,  plus Brass Transit, Oakland Stroke and for years with Robbie Lane and The Disciples.

The list of artists Bernie worked with was long and I don’t do him proper justice by not noting them.   He started in the business as a drummer, which gave him a feel for music in the first place and he had a calm disposition, so he invariably had it together when we arrived at the last minute while any potential snags with management were avoided because he was so damned easy to get along with.  I never saw him angry.

He had those kind blue eyes that were always reassuring, always patient with our sometimes unreasonable requests, and he made you happy he was on the gig.  Sadly, he was in the queue ahead of us for doing his finale show, and I’ll miss him.

Bernie is survived by his son Spencer, a fine young man who became part of his crew at gigs.  He displayed the same diligence and good nature of his dad.

NOTE: Pretzel Logic and two other horn bands will be performing at a benefit for Bernie’s family on Sunday, June 9 from 6pm-midnight at Port House Social Bar, 139 Lakeshore Rd., E. in Port Credit.  Tickets start at $42.39, available from universe.com.
