“Jazz Mayor” takes stock; bows to Chow tonight

\ TORONTO WEST \

Though it doesn’t really come as a surprise, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment that Toronto’s would-be “Jazz Mayor”, Richard Underhill, is hosting tonight’s Chowstock gala fundraiser at Hugh’s Room.

I must have missed his formal announcement that the Juno-winning saxophonist and leader of The Shuffle Demons had decided to end his campaign to assume the city’s highest office and throw his support to Olivia Chow, but getting the email blurb inviting me to this show, with its reference to him as a “former mayoral candidate” left no doubt about that.

The reason for my disappointment is that, as I told you previously, Underhill actually had a surprisingly very well thought out platform, displaying a high degree of familiarity with municipal issues and civic affairs as well as a whole lot of progressive common sense.

But he did also say from the beginning that if it became clear to him he might not win (as surely he must have known would be the case from the outset) that he might throw his support to another candidate and Chow is the logical choice among the front-runners.

Regardless of any disappointment his followers may feel at his bowing out of the race, Underhill certainly contributed to the campaign debate and performed a valuable service by getting historically apathetic people (i.e. musicians) motivated to pay attention to the issues and, hopefully, to vote.

In addition to Underhill acting as emcee tonight, his Shuffle Demons will do a set along with Kevin Hearn of Barenaked Ladies with his band Thinbuckle, Latin singer Eliana Cuevas, Mustafa the Poet/Thompson Egbo-Egbo duo, master Jazz-Rock guitarist Wayne Cass, Funk-Reggae artist Chris Bottomley and Jazz singer Sophia Perlman.  Chow will also be on hand to address the audience and hobnob.

It’s not a cheap ducat by any means at $150 a head, but includes a full 3-course dinner and should be a memorable event.
