\ TO WEST \

We told you a couple of weeks ago about some of the acts that have been and will be appearing on five stages daily until Labour Day at the Canadian National Exhibition, all of which are free to see with your paid admission to the grounds.  It’s now down to the final weekend of the fair and some pretty fine talent is lined up this afternoon and this evening to start off what is supposed to be pretty much a lovely weekend weather-wise.

This evening fetching Country songwriter Angie Hilts continues her five-day residency in the Wine Garden bar, wrapping up Sunday, which venue also sees spectacular guitar virtuoso Johannes Linstead perform the afternoon sets right up till Monday. The Casino Stage is also loaded with talent today as versatile Pop performer Kenny V returns this afternoon (he’s at Shore Grill in Port Credit for no cover this evening) while one of TO’s favourite Top 40 cover bands, The High Rollers, make their second of two appearances there this evening.

But if I end up going to “The Ex” this afternoon I’ll be quite torn between whether to check out the Midway Stage, where Canada’s “Sweetheart of Swing” Alex Pangman & Her Alleycats, featuring Peter Hill on keys, will be featured 3-6, or to hang out in the countrified Northern Comfort Saloon to catch spectacular Ginger St. James doing her Rockabilly/Cabaret thing during the same time period.  If you’re likewise indecisive it might be worth knowing that Alex and her superb combo will also be there tomorrow, while Ginger is in residency up till Sunday.

I might start at the Northern Comfort stage and then hustle over (do they still have those electric “train” style transport cars at the CNE, I wonder?) to the Midway for the last part of its afternoon sets, since I’d definitely want to be there to catch the evening act:  Shawn Brady & The Northern Sons, about whom I’ve written a few times and who do Shawn’s only one 7:30-11 show there this year.  (Still, I’m glad he’s appearing with his originals project rather than with the U2 tribute he fronts, Elevation, which was his feature there the last couple of seasons.)

Shawn will have his work cut out for him, however, because he’s up against a pretty potent double-bill featured on the Bandshell stage:  one of Canada’s most popular alt Rock/Pop original acts, Junkhouse, opens with a half-hour set, followed by original B.C. based Pop headliners 54-40.

With all this music to choose from who will have time for roller coasters, ferris wheels, “skill” testing games, exhibits and displays, water shows, air show rehearsals or any other of the multitude of attractions that still draw folks to the fair like flies to a candy apple?  Mmmh … candy apples!
