Sehgal and Sobral among reasons to check out aBabe tonight

\TORONTO WEST\

Technically (and in the air based on the temperature and forecast) summer is still going on for another three weeks. But there’s something about the passing of the Labour Day weekend that signals change of season, even if hardly a solitary leaf can be seen to have started browning yet.

For the music biz that means the start of “prime time” when patios give way to pogo dancing and backyard gatherings are superceded by indoor intrigues.

Tonight’s aBabe showcase at The Painted Lady on Ossington Ave. in west TO starts the autumn season for that series off in fine form and features an artist whom I believe is going to make some serious waves over the next few years.

As I mentioned in a previous article for her last appearance as part of the aBabe series in early August, young Shikha Sehgal is an enchantingly captivating artist with a distinctive approach to covers and a unique blend of musical tapestries all woven together by her spellbinding voice.

With versatile Nelson Sobral (of Melting Pot, Chris Harper Band, I Hate Todd) accompanying her to help build an aural landscape, she transports listeners to an intimately emotional place.

The show in the club at 218 Ossington Ave. starts at 9 and Shikha is on second –but if what I’ve seen so far of the aBabe talents is any indication it’ll be worth getting there for the first set and staying right throughout the five-act evening, which will also see Sobral featured in the Chris Harper Band.
