This weekend’s plethora of TO festivals is absolutely insane!

/TORONTO/

As if I hadn’t written enough this week about festivals (namely the EXEE at Only Café, NXNE and Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival), there’s at least four others for various interest affiliations taking place over the weekend, including one happening today and tomorrow downtown and another running today only in the city’s Junction area in the west end. There’s also a Hip Hop festival, an Aboriginal festival and, lest we forget, Pride Week kicks off with a smattering of events leading up to next weekend’s big blowout. But in addition to the ones I’ve already written about, two of today’s festival events may be of particular interest to Moon readers.

One is the four-day Redpath Waterfront Festival (it started Thursday) at which FolkPop artist Lilly Mason performed yesterday and which today sees ten acts, including Shawn Brady & Hervé Basset, Julian Taylor Band and Irene Torres & The Sugar Devils.

The live music is just one component of this event, which takes place all along the waterfront between Spadina Ave. and Sherbourne St. The Sugar Beach Stage at 22 Dockside Drive features the live music acts.  Elsewhere along the shorefront you’ll find a kids’ adventure area, water sports on the lake, trained sports/EMS dogs and lots more.

Meanwhile, out in the Junction area, there’ll be three outdoor stages set up and live music indoors in eight venue locations along Dundas St. West both sides of Keele Street from noon till midnight for the The Junction Summer Solstice Festival. You can catch acts like Michael O’Grady Band, Jessica Bundy, Jake Chisholm, Young Running and Chris Staig & The Marquee Players on the outdoor stages among 13 sets taking place. Although not listed on the festival website, the Julian Fauth brunch show at Axis is also part of this, as is a 4-8 show at The Hole In The Wall with Roots ‘n’ Branches featuring Dave McManus on bass.

(Also worth checking out: nearby at Gate 403, at 403 Roncesvalles Ave., the club kicks off its participation in this year’s Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival with the season finale show for Bill Heffernan’s weekly 5-8 p.m. Roots series, with special guests Taxi Chain, a Celtic-Rock Fusion band that really will get you rockin’ and reelin’.)

Personally I’m already reeling after researching the plethora of amazing musical acts that are being featured this weekend at so many different shows for so many different reasons. Time now to get out and do some rockin’!
