Album cover art for ‘The Hard Lesson’ by Terry Jones

\ TO CENTRAL \

One of the principal songwriters and guitarists for famed 70s/80s Canadian Psychedelic Folk-Rock band Perth County Conspiracy, can be found this performing this afternoon —by those who know where to look.

For Terry Jones, it can now be revealed will be this week’s guest with venerable poetic pair Robert Priest and Max Layton at their monthly 5-7 show in TO’s Tranzac Lounge.

We’ve written previously about these remarkable second-Sunday gatherings, which present Priest’s spoken word and songwriter/poet Layton’s compositions backed by a super-talented house ensemble that includes versatile David Hines on guitar and always interestingly inventive accompanist Ed Roth on digital accordion or keys.

The events, known as “More Songs and Poems Sundays,” also feature a stellar special guest or two teamed with the house crew.  And today’s presentation is definitely a special one, since Jones doesn’t really appear much on stage these days.

Jones was a seminal member of the Conspiracy dating back to its founding in 1969 and he is featured prominently as a composer and performer on their Alive second album.  He also, many years later, issued a release under his own name, The Hard Lesson, which was recorded with fellow PCC alumni David Woodhead over fifteen years. 171205 Moon lights up live music night ALT

Woodhead (who, btw, is also a bandmate of the house group’s Bob Cohen in another project) describes Jones’s disc as an album that “brings out Terry’s warm voice, covering a lot of musical ground from a playful Mississippi John Hurt tune to sixties “pop sounds”, with plenty of engaging songwriting in between.”  In addition to Jones and Woodhead on multiple instruments, it also features the harp stylings of Carlos del Junco and voice Katherine Wheatley among others on backup vocals.

It doesn’t appear to be a disc you can order online but I’d expect Jones will have some copies of it with him this afternoon when he joins the fun in the Southern Cross lounge of the venue at 292 Brunswick Ave. in TO’s Annex area.
