After their yearly summer break, the good folks who stage the last-Sunday monthly Lazy Cat open stage in the Bain Co-op in TO’s Riverdale area are back with a world-acclaimed songwriter and musician as their feature this afternoon along with a new co-host.

Don Stevenson, now in his 70s, is known world-wide as the drummer and a chief songwriter and vocalist of the 60s band Moby Grape, which released its debut self-titled album in 1967.  In 2003 the disc was ranked as number 121 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the best-ever 500 albums.  The band endured a lot of difficulties, including legal entanglements that hobbled their career, but all of its five members went on to make their own music or join other bands, though it wasn’t until 2010 that Stevenson finally released a solo record, King of the Fools, which has had excellent reviews. His talent and contribution to his seminal group and its later solo expression has in fact been compared to that of Don Henley to The Eagles.

Stevenson, who grew up in Seattle and ended up in San Francisco in the ‘60s when MG was formed, has been living in TO for a while now and, in his own words, is “playing guitar, writing music, singing [and] playing with great musicians.”  He’s appeared in the past few months either solo or in conjunction with other talented artists, at several Roots and Roots-Rock/Blues friendly venues such as Relish, Fat Albert’s, Old Nick, Amico’s Pizza and The Feathers.

His feature set for this afternoon’s show in the community centre at 100 Bain St. (with an entrance off Sparkhall Ave.) will take place midway through the 3 pm–5:30 pm event co-hosted by songwriter Linda Lavender and her new co-host Andy Du Rego, who is replacing David Shilman.

Shilman, who’s also a songwriter and singer-guitarist (and half of the Lavender and Twang duo with his former co-host) and a witty emcee, is still very involved with the event, however.  He’ll be continuing to handle social media promotion, as he has done very successfully over the past five years, and you can expect him to be on hand and to no doubt receive a salute from all assembled at today’s edition.
