The Spirit should suit The Linsmore to a ‘T’ with Hendrix-worthy guitar

\TORONTO EAST\

The mind boggles when you try to imagine what sort of music the iconic Jimi Hendrix would be making today had he not died so ridiculously prematurely in 1970 from a drug overdose.

The charter member of the “27 Club” (of famous entertainers such as him and Jimmy Morrison, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones and Kurt Cobain, among others, who all died at 27) was on top of the world at the time of his death, reportedly the highest paid musician up to that time, headliner of the Woodstock and other festivals and seeing his third album, Electric Ladyland, riding atop the charts at Number 1.

Would he have mellowed out? Developed an entirely new style of music (as he more or less had done with electric guitar Blues already) or what?

No one can know for sure, but if you want to get an idea as to how a hugely talented and inventive player like that can continue to evolve as an artist well into his 40s, you might want to check out Tony “Wild T” Springer & The Spirit tonight at Linsmore Tavern in east TO.

Songwriter and guitarist Springer has had his share of fame while with Can-Rock/Punk icons Rough Trade in the ‘80s, then in the early 90s as a celebrated star internationally following his six-string contributions on David Bowie’s Black Tie White Noise album.

He has also done (and continues to do every year) countless shows in arenas and stadiums in North America and Europe both with his own band and doing a Hendrix tribute known as Fire. At least a few Hendrix covers are always part of a Spirit gig (and he’s humble enough to acknowledge requests).

But Springer also has a raft of originals that appear, along with some stellar covers, on six albums and counting. Like Hendrix, his original material combines elements of Rock and Blues in strange and delightful ways, but moreover the Trinidad-born creative whirlwind incorporates strains of Funk and Reggae into the mix to whip up an entirely distinctive and exciting live experience.

Then there’s his own sometimes quirky and always captivating persona, creating a magnetic pulse in the room as he lets slide amusing life observations and anecdotes and often involves the audience in snappy interplay.

The show in the nearly 80-year old room (the anniversary is later this year) at 1298 Danforth Ave., steps from Greenwood subway station, gets underway at 9:30 and cover is just $10 –or $5 if you get there before show time to buy your ducats in advance!
