Ed Roth and drummer Duncan McBain of Bentroots -Gary 17

Accordion master Ed Roth -Gary 17

It’s Mardi Gras Tuesday and for fans of swampy New Orleans-style boogie Blues band Bentroots the day wouldn’t be complete without a performance by the star-laden quintet. Fronted by Nicholas Balkou and much enhanced by piano man Michael Fonfara, the group nevertheless gets its signature sound largely due to the ace accordion work of squeeze-master Ed Roth, who has a digital instrument that emulates the sounds of a Hammond B3, a harmonica or violin among hundreds of other voices.

Last night they performed for “Lundi Gras” (and to celebrate Roth’s birthday) at Relish, where they were formerly a bi-weekly fixture (though this time under a secret identity name, for some reason.)  Tonight they’re doing a two-hour 8:30-10:30 show at Castro’s On Queen St. E. in the Beaches and you can expect the party to be just as lively. Come earn your beads! -17
