\ DURHAM REGION \

A community leader on the music scene in Durham Region and nearby areas, Blues guitarist and songwriter Howard Ross has his hands full this weekend presiding over musical shows that also double as seasonal extravaganzas. He appears with his Full Count Blues Band tonight, Saturday and Sunday at shows in Oshawa, Newmarket and Ajax.

Tonight’s Full Count Christmas event at large and welcoming Simcoe Blues & Jazz in Oshawa is nearly sold out at press time despite a $20 cover charge, because it’s a seasonal highlight for the area’s Blues scene and has been for the past nearly three decades —tonight’s is the 29th edition.

The event will also double as a kind of unofficial party for the Durham Region Music Society and each year the gathering raises money for a worthy cause. This year proceeds will help benefit Durham guitarist Bruce Longman, who’s had a very difficult time over the past several months. After suffering a heart attack earlier in the year, he then ended up with serious injuries in a car accident this autumn and while he’s a gamer who has tried to get back active on the scene, he now is dealing with various complications from the ensuing surgeries. He just had a new surgery this month as a matter of fact and has been in the hospital for over a week but was due to be released by today and could be in attendance tonight.

The show in the room at 926 Simcoe St. N. features a 12-piece all-star combo that includes the The Badass Brass horn section and special guests Johnny Mack, Jack de Keyzer, Eric Lambier, Phil Manning and an opening set by Bobby Watson. While only a dozen seating tickets were left at press time, there will be standing room availability too.

Tomorrow Ross and his talented band move north to Newmarket, where they’re featured at 9:30 p.m. at the local Big Daddy’s on Davis Drive. Sometime on Sunday the group also does a show at Mystic Lounge on Monarch St. in Ajax for which there’s a $10 cover and dress code.
