Laura Hubert Live Recording

Laura Hubert & Peter Hill -GARY 17

Laura Hubert & Peter Hill -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

There’s understandably a lot of excitement and anticipation about a double-seating pair of shows tonight at which Pop Jazz singer Laura Hubert will be recording a new live album with her band at Poetry Jazz Café in Kensington Market!

The evening is organized and presented by the Kensington Market Jazz Festival collective (about which we wrote favourably at its inception in 2016) which naturally has regarded Laura and her stellar combo as a true gem among the many shining talents in the area, as we told you last year when she kicked off the festival’s second annual edition in September.

The blurb about tonight’s extra-special occasion on its Facebook event page says it at least as well as anything I could write, so let’s let it speak for itself!

On Monday March 5, 2022, Kensington Market Jazz Festival will proudly embark on a new venture. Following through on the festival’s mandate of “Presenting Live Musical Excellence Since 2016” and celebrating the rich cultural fabric of Toronto artists, KMJF will proudly produce a live recording by JUNO-winning Canadian vocal treasure Laura Hubert.

Best-known for being the lead singer and founding member of alternative rock group Leslie Spit Treeo, Hubert’s unique and soulful vocal delivery can make any old song sound brand new, whether she sings Bessie Smith, Hank Williams, Billie Holiday or Patsy Cline.

Laura has released three solo recordings independently: “My Girlish Days” (2000), “Live at the Rex” (2002) and “Half Bridled” (2004). It is time for a new album and after several decades of being entertained by Laura Hubert at venues throughout Toronto, her fans will have the opportunity to be a part of a truly special evening that will live on, capturing a timeless Canadian sound born and honed in our own city.

170901 (cx5) Moon 17 centsWLaura will be accompanied by some of this country’s finest musicians on this special evening: Peter Hill (piano); Steve Wallace (bass); Davide DiRenzo (drums); and Eric St-Laurent (guitar).

There are two show seatings, at 7pm and 9:30pm.

Fans will have the opportunity to support this initiative by attending the performance, with the option of pre-purchasing the album in advance: there are no advance reservations, and CASH ONLY accepted at the door. $20 general admission or $50 admission includes advance copy of the CD (expected fall 2018); $100 admission includes 3 advance copies of the CD (expected fall 2018).

All other donations to this cause will be gratefully accepted at the door. If you cannot be there but would like to contribute to this project please email us at [email protected]***

This momentous event in the room at 224 Augusta Ave. sounds like a “can’t miss” night for many reasons!
