David Macmichael & Paul Brennan accompany a jammer at Relish -GARY 17

David Macmichael & Paul Brennan accompany a jammer at Relish -GARY 17

\ TO EAST \

It’s been just over eight years tonight since Joanne Clayton first tried out live music at her funky tapas bar on Danforth Ave. a block east of Woodbine and both her restaurant and the east TO live music scene have never been quite the same since.

These days Relish offers at least ten shows a week, with two or even three some Saturdays and Sundays, but at the heart of it remains the event that began eight years ago: the “always the same and always completely different” Sunday night Stir It Up Sundays jam.  Tonight the room will celebrate the weekly open stage going into its ninth year and this edition ought to be a doozy!

The night that began it all at Relish has evolved over the years of course.  Versatile and pleasant-mannered drummer Paul Brennan is the only member of the original hosting crew who’s still part of it.  In the early days a full band was thought necessary since no one knew how many people might come out but nowadays that’s never a problem, as a coterie of regular participants along with an everchanging mix of semi-regulars and first-timers always ensures the roster is full.

For the past several years now Brennan has been working with co-host and emcee David Macmichael (an engaging, entertaining multi-instrumentalist and singer who plays a very solid bass) to provide support for artists wishing it and welcoming solos, combos and full bands to share the now fully equipped, dedicated stage.  Stylistically it’s completely wide open —I’ve seen everything from Country to Jazz, Classical, Folk, Blues, Pop and Rock of course, drum ‘n’ bass, Hip Hop, Rap and some stuff that simply defies description.

I’m not going to rehash everything I’ve written on several occasions over the past eight years about this always delightful destination event that attracts players from all across the city.  Two years ago, for example, I think I captured a lot of the magic in an article about the sixth anniversary of the jam, which also looks shares a bit of the history of the host groups and participants.

170313 Truly Support 2As I mentioned then, a short list of just some of the artists of whose music I’ve become a fan after first hearing them at Relish —in addition to host Macmichael and his Danger Bees of course— includes Bryan Van Dusen, Clela Errington, Das Fagott Mannschaft, Jace Traz, James Clark, Jessica Speziale, Jody Ferrer, Lilly Mason, Lindy Vopnfjörd, Mary Stewart, Robert Pelletier, Sam Taylor, Sandra Bouza and Smokey Folk —to name just a few!

It all kicks off at 9 or so (arrive earlier if you want a seat and you will enjoy the food immensely if you go for dinner) and runs till 1 or a little later in the tiny and very cozy, welcoming room at 2152 Danforth Ave. on the corner of Cedarvale, a block around the corner east from the Woodbine subway station.
