Tonight’s ABC Songwriters Circle seems like the IWD edition | TorontoMoon.ca 180306Tu | Shows for Tuesday, March 06, 2022

Sandra Bouza @ Birdseye Festival, 2017 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

I don’t know if host songwriter Robert Pelletier planned it this way or not, but with International Women’s Day coming up on Thursday and lots of fem-centric events this week, tonight’s edition of his weekly ABC Songwriters Circle seems like it could have been designed as a timely tip-of-the-hat to female talents.

He’s got three songwriting and vocal powerhouses on tap in Folk-Rock recording artist Sarah Siddiqui, Rock/R&B belter Sandra Bouza and super versatile songwriter/promoter/impresario Elana Harte as the three talents with whom he’ll be sharing the stage at the 9-12 event at Amsterdam Bicycle Club.

We’ve written about the ABC series on several occasions of late, (most recently last month) of course, and it’s hard not to when Pelletier brings in such impressive talent on a regular basis.  As we’ve pointed out previously, one of the salient features of the in-the-round style occasions in the room at 54 The Esplanade is how expertly and entertainingly Pelletier engages the participants in conversation about the songs they play and music/artistic life in general.

Elana Harte -GARY 17

I’m not really familiar with Siddiqui’s material first-hand (though I’m certainly well aware of her rising stature on the local scene) but have followed Harte and Bouza for some time now, and actually got to see them as part of the same event not too long ago, at the hugely successful Birdseye Festival which was put on by Elana at Eton House last October and that we wrote about at the time.  Sandra has also been a regular guest at Harte’s M Factor Indie Music Showcase and Open Stage that now takes place alternate Wednesdays (the next is March 14) at Linsmore Tavern.

I think it’s safe to expect that all three of the guests will have interesting things to say about their music and artistic voyages to complement what they perform, whether it’s on topics like #MeToo and whether the music biz is a liberator or oppressor of women or simply the more universal struggle of all artists to make rent and still find time to write.

There’s no cover and drinks are surprisingly affordable in the somewhat toney room that has comfy chairs and a welcoming ambience and staff.
