\ TO EAST \

The Danforth-Woodbine area would be a good destination tonight for fans of Roots-Pop and Country-Pop, as two shows within two blocks of one another feature very talented artists doing original material.

Rory Cummings Trio with Jim Bird & Wayne Allison @ Relish 130112-1

The early no-cover show runs 7-9 at Relish at 2152 Danforth, a block east of Woodbine on the corner of Cedarvale Ave. and features a melodic Country songwriter I’ve been a fan of for several years now.

Rory Cummings returns with his trio, nowadays called Rory Cummings Band (or RBC for short) that he fronts backed by two members of his larger Country covers and originals combo, The One Shot Band, (Jim Bird on bass and Wayne Allison on drums).  As I’ve written before, Cummings’ songs are about as catchy as you can get, many with a feel similar to Blue Rodeo and several of which are guaranteed earworms. In The Round 151001

A block-and-a-half west at Hirut Café, Boris Buhot returns with another 8-11 installment of his In The Round songwriters series, this month featuring himself, Frank Wilks, Tony Newman and Colin Campbell.

The four are all talented songwriters who will be arrayed in a row on a tidy and efficient stage. In addition to swapping songs they will no doubt also engage in a little impromptu jamming accompaniment of one another.

The restaurant, at 2050 Danforth, offers superior home-made Ethiopian cuisine that’s surprisingly affordable, some Canadian dishes and very reasonable drink prices –cover is pay what you can.
