‘Two-man Folk festival’ releasing new album at Hugh’s

\ TORONTO WEST \

I haven’t actually heard banjo player Chris Coole perform before that I’m aware of and I’ve certainly not had the pleasure of enjoying his much talked-about prowess on the instrument in conjunction with acclaimed dobro player Ivan Rosenberg.

But based on what the Banjo Newsletter and Bluegrass Unlimited specialty publications have to say about this pair and their debut album Farewell Trion, and the fact that they’re holding a release tonight for the follow-up recording, Return to Trion, at august venue Hugh’s Room, I have to believe they’re pretty damn fine old-timey “Rootsabilly”-style entertainers.

The Banjo Newsletter calls the pair a “two-man Folk festival” and compares them to iconic duo Doc Watson and David Holt. The promotional write up for tonight’s 8:30 p.m. show in the dinner-concert venue at 2261 Dundas St. W. goes even further, calling them “the only clawhammer and dobro duo act anywhere”!

(Clawhammer is a distinctive style of banjo picking that emphasizes the melodic aspects of the instrument. Coole is known for his prowess with the style as a member of Bluegrass band The Foggy Hogtown Boys and, when not touring in support of his albums, also does a weekly 5 p.m. Sun. show at The Local on Roncesvalles Ave.)

If you’re ready for something a little different and highly entertaining on an otherwise rather ordinary, drab looking Monday night, this show might just be it! Tickets are $22.50 or a little less if you’re still able to get them in advance.
