\ HAMILTON \

Just over three years ago we wrote about a benefit concert happening in TO to raise funds for ailing and somewhat troubled Canadian music icon Kelly Jay (Blake Fordham) of Crowbar fame.

The event helped buoy his spirits and quite possibly to help prolong his life, but sadly on June 21, at 77 years of age, he passed away after suffering a stroke the week before.

Kelly Jay -GO FUND ME

Kelly Jay -COURTESY, 2016

The stroke was the final blow in a series of life difficulties and setbacks that, as detailed in our 2016 article, included the tragic deaths of a daughter and his wife as well as medical conditions that had been assailing him for many years including diabetes and a hoarding disorder.

He had been living for over 30 years in the Calgary area but still regarded Hamilton, Ontario, from whence the Crowbar band emerged in the early 1970s and rocketed to international stardom with its hit “Oh What A Feeling” from its second album —still an iconic Rock anthem very popular at events and on radio.

Tonight, some of the band’s former members (such singer-drummer Sonnie Bernardi and saxist Sonny Del-Rio as well as a plethora of other CanRock icons and veterans who were friends of Fordham’s will gather at Leander Boat Club to pay him tribute.

Bernardi says on the Facebook event page for the show that band members have “been reminiscing on a lot since hearing the news.

“We are looking forward to celebrating our gratitude for our friend Kelly Jay with the things that brought us all together from the beginning - great music and good times.”

If the group does reunite this evening it will be the second time in just over a year they’ve done so to salute a former comrade.  In June of last year, as we reported at the time, they took the stage together for the 15th annual tribute to the late King Biscuit Boy (Richard Newell) who was a founding member of the group when it began and a regular guest on harp until his death in 2003.

There’s just a nominal $10 cover charge (plus requested food bank item dontation) for the 7 p.m. concert in the club at 50 Leander Drive, with proceeds being donated to Fordham’s family.
