The Roncy Boys: Christian Aldo, Colin Edgely, Iliya Vee -from THERONCYBOYS.COM

\ TO WEST \

We told you last fall, on the occasion of a reprise staging of their original art-Rock opera known as “The Devil’s Swan,” a little about The Roncy Boys, a trio of gifted musicians and writers who apply their talents in a somewhat outrageous and either delightful or despicable manner according perhaps to your personal ethos.

The lyrics for the lead-off song on the music page of their website, for example, “The Rules” (from their The Rise and Fall of the Roncy Boys ep —one of two along with It’s Time) will no doubt immediately grate on some of the feminist persuasion.  It starts out “I don’t care what they taught you in school/Hey now you’re my girl and I make the rules” and proceeds to outline an expected behavioural code of rules that a young John Lennon would have approved of whilst penning “You Can’t Do That”.

But their catalogue seems to convey a sort of theatrical sensibility rather than expressing inner emo or heavy, soulful revelations about the universe.  This operatic but playfully instrumentalized, somewhat satirically Vaudevillian art-Rock music is so cheery, fun and over the top that it’s hard to think anyone would seriously regard it as anything but tongue-in-cheek.

The fact that the group describes itself as “The Bad Boy Dandies of Piano Glam Rock” could be a pretty big clue and with some of their songs forming part of the aforementioned art-Rock opera, the material should perhaps be viewed in that context rather than as any kind of statement about life and relationships by the band members.

170313 ARTISTS EXPOSED Moon prALT2Whatever you’re take on that, certainly producing this sort of supercharged energy and getting across that fun-loving feel in a live setting as one of three acts in a club setting cannot be easy.  But tonight the core trio of the group that sometimes expands for theatrical shows —singer Christian Aldo, Colin Edgely on piano and backing vox and Iliya Vee (whose Dreadful Starlings band we’ve also raved about here) on bass— will endeavor to do just that.

The Boys will be sharing the stage at The Painted Lady, (218 Ossington Ave.) from 9 -1 with two other highly regarded Indie acts: Angela Saini and Big Name Actors, which they’re sandwiched in between, making for a very tasty musical meal.

Doors are at 8:30 and cover is $12 but bring extra dough because you’ll definitely be wanting to take some recorded product home with you if you attend this stimulating sonic smorgasbord.
